Important Notice for Members: CDL Medical Card Self-Certification
Protect Your Drivers’ CDLs and Their Livelihoods
GSTA is alerting all members: it is critical that CDL drivers self-certify their DOT medical card with the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission (NJMVC). This is an important step you’ll want to share with your drivers to protect their licenses and avoid disruptions on the road.
Why This Matters
Under the current system, the DOT medical examiner uploads medical evaluations and medical cards into the NJMVC system. If there is any delay, error, or technical issue, a CDL can be de-certified without the driver’s knowledge.
While NJMVC sends notification letters, they are mailed after the CDL has already been de-certified, and mail delays could mean drivers don’t receive them for days—or even weeks. This can put your drivers at risk of being out-of-service, receiving tickets, and losing work.
How Drivers Can Self-Certify
- Complete the CDL Self-Certification Form
- Include copies of:
- Valid DOT Medical Card
- Driver’s License

- In Person: Visit any NJMVC facility (no appointment needed) and let the front desk know you are self-certifying your CDL medical card.
